“Oh, don’t talk to me about the devil. I’m a Christian. ‘Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the World.’ When Satan attacks me, I just ask Jesus to take care of it.”

Doesn't that sound spiritual? But take a closer look at the life of the person making that remark. Has he dedicated his time to Jesus? And his money and his talent? Or is he like many Christians, occupied with making a living, enjoying the family, and having good times?

Many who make such high-sounding claims are caught in Satan's web and DON'T KNOW IT. Masses of Christians feel immune to satanic attacks because they are IN CHRIST. They may feel safe, but they are NOT SAFE. The Lord and the apostle Paul specifically warned believers against their enemy and urged them to resist him, to stand up to him and fight. “In addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Eph 6:16-17).

But where do you find Christians being taught to fight? You do not. Even pastors do not fight, let alone teach their people to do so. Without argument, the Lord has given us authority and power to deal with our enemy, but few use it. Very few know how. That is why the church is impotent today, why believer's lives are being squandered on things of this world.

The reality of Satan is missing from American Christianity!

Surely, you know God could destroy Satan with a word, don't you? But God did not dispose of him. Instead, He USES him to bring us to maturity. There is no way we can be overcomers without something to overcome. That is why Satan is around. Without the devil, Christians could not be overcomers. Without a fight, there is no victory. That is what victory means—winning the fight.

Yes, Jesus defeated the devil, but He left him with ALL of his power intact. Instead God EMPOWERS US TO FIGHT. And thus we come to the real battle of the Christian life—the flesh versus the spirit—the very battle Paul describes in Galatians 5:17:

"For the flesh wars against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary to each other so that you CANNOT DO THE THINGS you want to do."

Of course, Jesus is greater than Satan. The knowledge of Jesus' overwhelming power does not immunize us or insulate us against satanic manipulation. Because the Lord lives inside us does not diminish our responsibility in any way. It does not cancel the warfare of the believer.

Christians who think they are AUTOMATICALLY PROTECTED from Satan's dirty work, are the very ones he leads by the nose. I will mention a few things he does to those who regard 1 John 4:4 as automatic protection:

● Leads believers into debt by stirring up cravings for things.

● Causes husbands and wives to focus on each other's faults to cause trouble between them.

● Plants mischief in the hearts of your children.

● Lures you into watching the wrong kind of TV programs.

● A little cheating on your income taxes.

● Makes you feisty and contentious over certain Bible doctrines.

● Gets you to worry about personal and financial problems to the point of desperation.

● Triggers unclean scenes in your imagination.

● Stirs up anger, bitterness, jealousy, temper, and more.

If Jesus' presence provided believers with automatic protection, there would be no such list. The devil is free to lay waste to the church, the body of Christ. This is why the majority of Christians live for themselves rather than for Jesus. Sure, they go to church and tithe, but they remain the same people year after year. They do not change into the likeness of Christ, which is God's whole purpose in leaving us here after we are saved (Rom 8 29).

After calling Satan the "God of this age” (2 Cor. 4:44), Paul warns, "Give no place to the devil” (Eph. 4:27). Yet that is the very thing this age is doing. By ignoring him, he is given the chief place in lives. Paul further admonishes believers to arm themselves and take a stand against him (Eph. 6:11-16). John tells us that "The whole world is under the control of the evil one" (1 John 5:19).

Peter says we are to resist him, "steadfast in the faith” (1 Pet. 5:9). And James flat out commands: "Resist the devil and he will flee from you" (James 4:7).

We have no choice about this. It is God's ambition for us that we should be victors over Satan by making use of the power and authority He's given us—in Christ—which is awesome. If we don't, then we have no one to blame but ourselves if our lives drift aimlessly in the routines of worldly life.

I mean do you know how to put Satan to flight and how to make him flee from you as James instructs? If you do not, you will remain a helpless victim. But when the devil flees, the release that follows is fabulous! If you have never tasted it, you are living far below your privileges in Christ. And you will remain part of the vast crowd that was never taught to fight, and Satan will know it. To win, you must deal directly with the devil. In fact, it is a biblical axiom that:

We must deal as directly with Satan for deliverance as we do with the Lord Jesus for salvation.

The Bible has as much to say about Satan and hell as it does about Jesus and heaven. The skill for putting Satan to flight is available. In a very short time, it can bring you one of the greatest thrills you have ever experienced. Note this:

"Dr. Lovett, until I read your book DEALING WITH THE DEVIL, I thought all the evil things occurring in my mind originated with me. Satan made me feel so guilty, it was difficult to get anything out of reading the Bible and to draw close to Jesus. What a relief to learn how to deal with him and be free of his ugly influence. My life has changed dramatically. Now I enjoy the Lord and the Word in a way I never dreamed possible.”

If you are tired of having awful things surface in your mind; tired of troubles in your home and on the job; tired of battling fear and finances, then make yourself aware of Satan's power and the way he uses it against you. Learn about the surpassing power God has given you and how to use it.

Did the Holy Spirit move in you as you read this article? Maybe you even thought of ordering the book DEALING WITH THE DEVIL. If you hesitate, Satan will win again. That is the way he works. His procrastinating influence can stop you in your tracks. So OVERRULE his dirty work with quick action and show God you mean business about. . .

Question: “Could you suggest some Christian guidelines for recognizing cults and false teachers?”

Answer: Here are three tests by which believers can identify cults and cult workers:

1. What place they give the Lord Jesus. Do they acknowledge Him as God in human flesh? Who Jesus is—the cornerstone of our faith. Any group that does not acknowledge the deity of Jesus, is a cult.

2. The second test has to do with salvation. Ask if their group teaches that salvation comes through faith in Jesus plus nothing. If anything is added to faith, it is no longer faith. Faith is ruined when such things as circumcision, Sabbath-keeping, speaking in tongues, or water baptism is added to it.

3. If they use any book, other than the Bible, as their primary guide for faith and practice, it is a cult. This is not to say they cannot use the writing of men as aids and helps, but the basis for faith must be the Word of God. All we have in this world is the Word of God on the outside and the Holy Spirit on the inside.

“If you do not believe that I am the one I claim to be,

you will indeed die in your sins” (John 8:24).

UNUSUAL FEAR: “For 21 years, Satan had me bound with the fear of poverty. I’ve had job after job. Then someone gave me a copy of DEALING WITH THE DEVIL. When I saw the source of my fear and my poverty, I began dealing with him, and almost immediately my income doubled. Now I’ve been so blessed, I own my own business. Praise God He used you to deliver me from that terrible fear and the financial ruin it brought.” (B. S.-Canada)

DELIVERED FROM FEAR: “I’ve been filled with fear about something horrible going to happen to me. I began to have dreams about it. My dear husband, suspecting Satan was behind my fear, sent for a copy of your DEALING WITH THE DEVIL book. I used the technique to take authority over Satan and that was the end of my fear. If I do face the real thing, at least Satan won’t be able to terrorize me. I’m so grateful for the help you’ve given me.” (D.J.-KY)

AN EYE OPENER: “I’ve just finished reading DEALING WITH THE DEVIL. Wow, what an eye-opener! How revealing. I’ve been wondering for some time why I was progressing so slowly in my Christian life. Now I know. Praise the Lord for showing me what to do about it. This book fell into my hands by ‘accident.’ How awful if I’d missed it. You are doing a fabulous job for the body of Christ.” (D.S.-AR)
